Does anyone represent the people?

Alex Salmond & Nicola Sturgeon, respectively First Minister and Deputy First Minister (as well as Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing) vote firmly against the bill for assisted suicide

With a landslide parliamentary vote against assisted suicide – and a landslide public opinion poll in favour – one has to ask if any members of the Scottish Parliament actually support the Scottish people (as opposed to being swayed by well-run campaigns).

Here’s the list.

Presiding Officer: “The next question is, that motion S3M-7438, in the name of Margo MacDonald, on the End of Life Assistance (Scotland) Bill, be agreed to. Are we agreed?”

The Presiding Officer: “The result of the division is: For 16, Against 85, Abstentions 2.
Motion disagreed to.”

According to the poll, conducted by Angus Reid, 77% of adult Scots back the legislation, while 12% opposed it and the remainder were unsure. The survey, carried out from 14-16 April, asked 1,001 people: “The Scottish Parliament is considering the End of Life Assistance (Scotland) Bill, which would allow people with intolerable terminal illnesses to be assisted if they wish to end their own life. Do you agree this option should be available to people in Scotland?” Similar polls produce a similar result.
